How natural light is essential in daily life

I have been getting messages from my friends asking for NATURAL LIGHT/DAY-LIGHTING solutions for different areas like houses, flats, multi-storied buildings, flats, offices with false ceilings, factories, warehouses, and so on. I have decided to come up with a write-up on natural daylighting solutions.

natural daylight benefits

I have thought of writing a series of posts to share whatever knowledge and experience I have for the benefit of all and further enhance my learning through various comments and observations .I get from those who read them. Let me state unequivocally that I do not claim to be an expert on this subject, but rather someone who is interested in learning as much as possible about it. Experts, please correct me wherever there is a need and scope of improvement. The data is collected over a period of time from various sources In this post I will share facts about sunlight, who is at risk, symptoms and diseases associated with insufficient sunlight.

sunlight facts

  • A major cause of deficiency is insufficient sun exposure on the skin.
  • The sun provides 90% or more of our vitamin D needs. We only get very small amounts from our diet in vitamin D-fortified foods.
  • Vitamin D is predominantly made by the action of ultraviolet light (sunlight) on 7-dehydrolcholesterol, the vitamin D precursor that is found in the skin.
  • Vitamin D is metabolized by the liver into 25-hydroxyvitamin D. Enzymes in the kidneys metabolize it further to form the highly active hormone that is involved in essential biochemical processes throughout the body.
  • Disorders linked with vitamin D deficiency include strokes, cardiovascular, disease, osteoporosis, several forms of cancer, some autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and diabetes, depression, and schizophrenia.

  • risk factors

  • People with Limited Sunlight Exposure
  • People who have limited sunlight exposure because of their working environment may have low vitamin D levels.
  • People with Dark Skin
  • Higher melanin levels in the skin of dark-skinned people block the action of sunlight on vitamin D precursors in the skin, requiring much longer sunlight exposure to generate adequate circulating vitamin D compared to fair-skinned people.
  • Musculoskeletal Pain Sufferers People with symptoms of hypothyroidism.

  • symptoms of vitamin d deficiency

  • Human body functions are affected by patterns of light & dark.

    Effects of light Morning
  • Increasing light levels signals the body clock to begin active cycle
  • Body clock responds by producing serotonin, Adrenalin and cortisol, etc.

  • Effects of light Daytime
  • Level of these hormones rises, as well as temperature and metabolism.
  • By mid-afternoon, body's metabolism has reached peak

  • Effects of light Evening
  • Daylight intensity diminishes, body clock signals pineal gland to convert serotonin into melatonin > decrease body temperature.

  • Effects of light Night time and Sleep Onset
  • Melatonin and other night time hormones > endocrine system and blood stream. The body temperature drops as melatonin is released.

  • Effects of light Twilight and Awakening
  • At darkness twilight, body clock shuts down production of melatonin. It begins active cycle again.

  • light pollution

    Light Pollution

Mostly ignored by most domestic and commercial establishments. Light pollution is generally discussed with regard to excessive artificial lighting at night. How about daytime? We make huge structures (industrial sheds, ware houses, resorts, homes) where natural light is mostly blocked and use artificial lighting for illumination.

The artificial lighting industry tries to get close to natural light, but it is still not close enough to replicate natural light. Also, it is a constant light, which is not dynamic light as natural light, as explained above. People working under constant artificial light miss out on the benefits of natural light, which is the cause of many likely diseases . There is a solution to bring daylight into our built structures in most cases.

    Adverse effects of Light pollution

Further to my post on Daylighting, this is the last of that series. I would again insist that we need to create more awareness about light pollution.
Light pollution is abundant everywhere during the day and night. I will talk about daytime light pollution. Homes, resorts, offices, factories, warehouses, and everywhere else and we do not even register them. Low or poor light levels, living under constant artificial light, and too bright light levels are all examples of light pollution. Anything that puts eyes on stress is also due to light pollution. It is very common in individual bungalows to build multi-storey G+1 or 2 or more and make no provision for day lighting. When there is direct sunlight, we draw the curtain and switch on the light.

In factory/warehouse/commercial setups, we are used to seeing brightly lit rooms of the management and very poor lighting in sheds where workers work or poor yellow or blackened transparent sheets with very poor lighting. All this is light pollution, and we need to be aware of it.

    bad light

An attempt must be made to use natural light wherever possible. It will take care of everyone's health and also save on power bills. We need to follow the recommended BEE standards for lighting during the daytime with dynamic natural lighting.

Eview has designed a solution for all requirements. If we have missed out on any, we will design a solution. We believe in 100% customization for every requirement. I am attaching the PPT (click to view) of Eview to your ready reference to understand how we design our products. Do let me know if I have missed out on any points. Also, let us know your comments on my posts.

Following that, I'll begin a series on expanding waste plastic recycling and what Eview is doing about it.
